Tonight’s AJUG meeting is a double whammy – ‘Augmented Reality with Android’ and ‘Advanced JavaScript for Java Developers’. If you have any interest in Augmented Reality or feel like the whole prototypical language thing is still a mystery, we will see you tonight!

Summers Pittman, Java Developer extraordinaire at Engauge, will present on how to use computer vision technologies in Android. He will be presenting on Android application using the Qualcomm AR toolkit to control a Java game using Augmented Reality Tags. Summers also serves as the AJUG Web Chair and earned a degree in Human Computer Interaction from Georgia Tech.

Our second presentation of the evening will be given by Pratik Patel, author of the first book on enterprise Java, “Java Database Programming”, who will take us from basic JavaScript to advanced JavaScript. We will discuss and code modular JavaScript with CommonJS and look into the details of a prototype language, discussing things like parasitic inheritance. We will also look at JavaScript libraries that will help you get the most out of JavaScript – not jQuery, but libraries like UnderscoreJS and SugarJS.

This will be a fast paced session meant to bring you up to speed with the latest and greatest JavaScript techniques and tools. Whether you’re building client side JavaScript with HTML5 or Appcelerator Titanium, or server-side JavaScript with node.js, you’ll come away with knowledge and patterns for how the pros use JavaScript for building Real Apps.

Pratik is the CTO of Atlanta-based TripLingo and actively participates in several local tech groups and startups. Pratik’s specialty is in large-scale applications for mission-critical and mobile applications use. He has designed and built applications in retail, healthcare, financial services and telecom sectors. Pratik holds a master’s in Biomedical Engineering from UNC, has worked in places such as New York, London and Hong Kong, and currently lives in Atlanta. You can follow him on Twitter @prpatel.

It’s the last AJUG of 2011 – don’t miss it!

Our last meeting of the year will be tomorrow night from 7:00 – 9:00. As always, there will also be pre-meeting dinner and drinks from 5:30 – 6:30 at La Botana (sponsored by your favorite friends at Anteo Group).

This month’s presentation will take a closer look at ‘Building Modern Web Apps with HTML5 and DART.’  Modern web apps are rich, snappy, and work offline and mobile, too. In this talk, we’ll look at the frameworks and HTML5 features that make these possible and introduce DART, a new language for structured Web programming. In particular, we’ll take a look at the motivation for DART, language syntax and features, the DART Editor, using the JS compiler, and improvements to the DOM. We will also discuss DART in relation to JS and GWT.

Our speaker, David Chandler, works with the Google Developer Tools Team in Atlanta. An electrical engineer by training, Chandler got hooked on developing database Web application in the days of NCSA Mosaic and has since written Web applications in a variety of languages, including C, perl, ksh, ColdFusion, Java, JSF, GWT and now DART. Prior to joining Google, Chandler worked on internet banking applications with Intuit and launched a non-profit startup built with GWT and AppEngine. Chandler holds a patent on a method of organizing hierarchical data in relational database and blogs about Java Web development at turbomanage.wordpress.com.

We are asked this question at least one a week – ‘how can I learn about new technologies and stay relevant if I am not working with it on my current project?’ In an industry that is constantly evolving and forever progressing, it can be overwhelming to stay current. We have always given the same advice to our clients and will share the same sentiments today – take advantage of networking, conferences, any opportunity to broaden your technology horizons. Atlanta is a growing technology town, sprouting new user groups, conferences and associations faster than you can add an Outlook reminder.  As with staying up-to-date with technology, determining which user groups or conferences are worth your time can be daunting.

Fear not; your friends at Anteo Group are always here to help. We average 3-4 user groups/meet-ups/conferences/presentations a week and have been to enough user groups and meet-ups to share an opinion on the best of the best. Sure, you say to yourself, Anteo Group isn’t a development shop so they probably gauge the level of event success on the number of resumes we can collect. Trust me, we know how our participation can, at times, be perceived. That being said, our relationships here in Atlanta go beyond collecting resumes at user groups (in fact, they don’t even start there). We take the time to get feedback from developers, managers, etc. in the community as to what has worked for them; real examples and stories of what has proven to be an effective spend of their valuable time.

As part of our New Year’s Resolution (hey, it’s never too early to start planning), we are going to commit to passing along our top events and user groups of 2012 (in Atlanta, of course :)). With our powers combined, you will undoubtedly stay current. Let’s start from the top.

#1 DevNexus – March 21 – 22

For those of you that know us well or have heard the name, you know we have a long-standing, loving relationship with Java; it’s been our passion since we opened our first office 10 years ago. We were proudly the first sponsor of the Atlanta Java User Group and continue our support to this day.

If you are unfamiliar with the group, definitely take the time to familiarize yourself by visiting their website or by asking your friendly Java developer if they’ve ever been to an event; more specifically, ask them if they have ever been to DevNexus.

DevNexus is Atlanta’s most exciting conference for professional software developers; it gives you the opportunity to discover how the industry’s best minds use the latest technologies to build solutions to business problems. It also provides an opportunity to network with other Atlanta software developers and study real life case studies in application design and development.

This year, there will be 5 separate tracks that allow you to pick topics that are near and dear to your development heart. Given the impressive list of speakers, there will undoubtedly be topics of interest for everyone.

While tickets are not free, the ticket you purchase is of incredible value. Not only does it provide access to exceptional speakers and presentations, but you are also provided with book raffles, food, a cocktail hour for networking and mingling with speakers, and more.

To Register, please visit here.

Kelley Hafer is a Senior Business Development Manager with Anteo Group. If you have any feedback on the blog or have a user group, meetup or conference that you would like to share, please reach out to her at khafer@anteogroup.com. You can also connect with her on LinkedIn.

Hard to believe there are only two AJUG meetings left in 2011. It has been a great year of presentations and we are all eagerly awaiting the lineup for DevNexus 2012.

Apache Tomcat 7.0, the latest version of Apache’s open source servlet/JSP container, was officially released in January and has received numerous updates since this time. In this month’s presentation, Steve Heckler, will walk us through the new features of Tomcat including:

  • Servlet 3.0, JSP 2.2 and EL 2.2 support
  • Memory leak prevention and detection
  • Alias support for storing static content outside the WAR file
  • Numerous security improvements and a new cross-site request forgery protection filter
  • Windows authentication (an emerging new feature starting with 7.0.12)

Steve is the president of Accelebrate, an Atlanta-based provider of private training for corporations, government agencies, universities and other organizations in Java, web/application server administration, .NET, SQL Server, SharePoint and a wide array of other topics. Steve has been a Java developer since 1996 and has taught Tomcat since 2004 for more than 70 audiences throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.

Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night!

HTML5 is the new hotness and it’s time for the Atlanta development community to be part of the fun. The HTML 5 User Group is full of enthusiasts of HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and related cutting-edge web technologies. The group is new to town and will meet monthly with the industry’s leading experts who talk about, present, and demonstrate the latest concepts, features, APIs (you name it!) in this cool new world, and answer all your burning questions. The group typically meets on the third Thursday of each month (AJUGers no need to worry, it’s a different night :)).

This month’s presentation will focus on Augmented Reality and HTML5 – The Future of Mobile Application Development. While HTML5 continues to evolve within web browsers, other platforms are adopting the standard as a foundation of their application frameworks. In this session, Patrick Brandt, Director of the Emerging Technologies Group at Engauge Digital, will demonstrate the Argon augmented reality browser. Mobile AR is predicted to be a $732 million market by 2014 and it promises to provide new opportunities for HTML5 developers.

Argon is currently being developed by a team of researchers at Georgia Tech and is available as a beta release in the iTunes App Store. We will be looking at a demonstration application which is built in Argon on the iPad.

Anteo Group will be providing a light dinner and refreshments so please RSVP here. Also, a big shout out to Engauge Digital for hosting in their ridiculously awesome office space!

Look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday!

AJUG was standing room only last night for the inside scoop on Java 7! Presenter, Donald Smith, was not only funny, but insightful on the functions and improvements of our favorite language. The long awaited Java 7 was also toasted and discussed at our usual place of pre-AJUG fun (La Botana Tex Mex) with beers and tacos galore. Looking forward to seeing what shops in town move to Java 7 and who holds out for Java 8. We’d also like to give a shout out and best wishes to long time AJUG Board Member Burr Sutter on his new adventures in Charlotte, NC and we’d also like to extend a big welcome to Burk Hufnagel,  joining the Board of AJUG this month.
