You always hear stories (or legends) about social media being able to report and react almost instantaneously to breaking news.  Last night, I experienced one of these events that made me a believer in the ability of social media to function as a real-time news service.

I had let my sister borrow my car; this story sounds like a path to destruction already.  She implied that she left it at the Marta station and left for the airport.  I walked through each floor of the three parking decks at the station, twice, to no avail.  I got frustrated and posted to Facebook, “Big thanks to my sister for visiting this weekend!  Big ‘no thanks’ for not telling me where you left my car at Marta!”

Less than 3 minutes later, I received a comment from one of her friends telling me she had dropped her off at Marta and my car was safely on the street in front of my apartment.

3 minutes.  That was the response time for a member of the social media community to help me with my problem.

In the future, I cannot imagine how useful social media will be in instances like this.  Everyone connected to social media has a massive network of individuals who can provide instant updates on what they are experiencing and lend help when you have a problem that needs solving.

If you or someone you know has had an experience similar to this one, please share in the comment box below.

Tonight’s AJUG meeting is a double whammy – ‘Augmented Reality with Android’ and ‘Advanced JavaScript for Java Developers’. If you have any interest in Augmented Reality or feel like the whole prototypical language thing is still a mystery, we will see you tonight!

Summers Pittman, Java Developer extraordinaire at Engauge, will present on how to use computer vision technologies in Android. He will be presenting on Android application using the Qualcomm AR toolkit to control a Java game using Augmented Reality Tags. Summers also serves as the AJUG Web Chair and earned a degree in Human Computer Interaction from Georgia Tech.

Our second presentation of the evening will be given by Pratik Patel, author of the first book on enterprise Java, “Java Database Programming”, who will take us from basic JavaScript to advanced JavaScript. We will discuss and code modular JavaScript with CommonJS and look into the details of a prototype language, discussing things like parasitic inheritance. We will also look at JavaScript libraries that will help you get the most out of JavaScript – not jQuery, but libraries like UnderscoreJS and SugarJS.

This will be a fast paced session meant to bring you up to speed with the latest and greatest JavaScript techniques and tools. Whether you’re building client side JavaScript with HTML5 or Appcelerator Titanium, or server-side JavaScript with node.js, you’ll come away with knowledge and patterns for how the pros use JavaScript for building Real Apps.

Pratik is the CTO of Atlanta-based TripLingo and actively participates in several local tech groups and startups. Pratik’s specialty is in large-scale applications for mission-critical and mobile applications use.
